How You Can Help

Are you a jewelry professional? Do you own a retail store? Are you a bench jeweler? A jewelry designer? Do you run a jewelry training program? Do you manage a production shop? If you are a member of the jewelry industry, you know the importance of attracting new talent to the industry as bench jewelers.

Here are some specific things you can do to contribute to the BEaJEWELER Initiative:

  1. Talk about careers in jewelry making with anyone you know that may be interested in and capable of becoming a bench jeweler.
  2. Refer potential jewelers to the BEaJEWELER website.
  3. Use the hashtag #BEaJEWELER in social media posts whenever you talk about the joys and challenges of being a jeweler. Having fun with that? Here's are two more hashtags: #MakeSomething and #GetYourHandsDirty.
  4. Offer to do a career day demonstration at your local high school, technical school, or even grade school and middle school. Coming Soon: Career-Day Demonstration Programs from BEaJEWELER, all laid out for you, including tools and materials you'll need and how to make a fast, compelling, fun demonstration come alive for your audience.
  5. Become a BEaJEWELER Mentor
  6. Share photos of your bench and workshop environment to help us with our social media outreach (all photos we use will be credited to you, and submission of photos serves as permission to use them in BEaJEWELER promotion). Click here to upload.
  7. Share reminiscences, reflections, and observations about your life as a jeweler (all quotes we use will be credited to you, and submission of photos serves as permission to use them in BEaJEWELER promotion).

More things will be coming, but this is a pretty good start.

Please join us in recruiting and motivating young people and career-transitioning people to consider a career in jewelry making. Together we can keep the jewelry industry vibrant, productive, and local.

Become a Mentor

Want to be a mentor to an aspiring bench jeweler or jewelry maker?

Part of our BEaJEWELER initiative is to create a mentor network to attract young men and women to the jewelry-making field. We’re looking for people who have the gift of good hands and motivation to become jewelers.

We need your help in spreading the word and serving as mentors. You may be a jeweler or company that needs (or will soon need) more bench help, or you may simply have the time and desire to introduce the career of jewelry making to a promising young person.

Criteria

  • Master-level jewelry-making skills and knowledge.
  • The ability to share information about BEaJEWELER.com, where interested young people can find information on a bench jeweler’s typical job duties, skills needed, and work environment, as well as trade schools students can attend.
  • The time to answer questions about being a jeweler or to have a prospective jeweler visit your shop or bench area.
  • A desire to sustain a U.S.-based jewelry-making workforce.
  • Interested? This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for more information on becoming a mentor.

Once You're a Mentor

Once accepted as a BEaJEWELER mentor, here are the next steps you can take:

  • Review the few short pages that make up BEaJEWELER.com, so you can see the information we’re sharing with prospective jewelers. These pages will also help you in answering questions and presenting the field to young people.
  • Be prepared to receive some emails from local young folks who find BEaJEWELER.com. They may ask if they can set up an informational interview with you, either by phone, email, or in person. Speak from your own experience when answering their questions. Feel free to share with them the qualities you look for when hiring a bench jeweler, or what salaries are like in your region.

Share Your Insights

Do you remember when you were first choosing your career? You probably had a lot of questions. One of the most helpful things we can do for others considering our profession is to share our insights. Would you be willing to share your insights with prospective jewelers? You can share anything—how much you love it, how it challenges you, even what a hard day looks like! As long as your reflections are authentic, they will be very meaningful to people who want to become you someday.

If you wish to share a reflection, simply reply in the comments below. Your reflections will live on in this comment thread, and they will also be used in other areas of the BEaJEWELER website and on our social media. If you ever wish for your reflection to be removed, you can delete your comment or send us an email and we'll take care of it for you.

Thank you for helping!
